Refining the marine reptile turnover at the Early–Middle Jurassic transition

چکیده

Even though a handful of long-lived reptilian clades dominated Mesozoic marine ecosystems, several biotic turnovers drastically changed the taxonomic composition these communities. A seemingly slow paced, within-geological period turnover took place across Early–Middle Jurassic transition. This saw demise early neoichthyosaurians, rhomaleosaurid plesiosaurians and plesiosauroids in favour ophthalmosaurid ichthyosaurians cryptoclidid pliosaurid plesiosaurians, that will dominate Late and, for two them, entire Early Cretaceous as well. The fossil record this is however extremely poor change dominance appears to be spread middle Toarcian–Bathonian interval. We describe series ichthyosaurian plesiosaurian specimens from successive geological formations Luxembourg Belgium detail evolution reptile assemblages transition within single area, Belgo–Luxembourgian sub-basin. These fossils reveal continuing large microcleidid Temnodontosaurus -like up latest Toarcian, indicating structuration upper tier Western Europe ecosystems remained essentially constant very end Jurassic. also suddenly by Bajocian. results geographically-restricted area provide clearer picture shape occurring at early–Middle event restricted sole Aalenian stage, reducing uncertainty its duration, least 4 instead 14 million years.

First Diagnostic Marine Reptile Remains from the Aalenian (Middle Jurassic): A New Ichthyosaur from Southwestern Germany

BACKGROUND The Middle Jurassic was a critical time in the evolutionary history of ichthyosaurs. During this time interval, the diverse, well-studied faunas of the Lower Jurassic were entirely replaced by ophthalmosaurids, a new group that arose sometime prior to the Aalenian-Bajocian boundary and by the latest middle Jurassic comprised the only surviving group of ichthyosaurs. Thus, the Middle ...

The “South Gondwana Fauna” in the Jurassic – an example of the utility of marine Ostracods for palaeobiogeography and palaeogeographic researches

The present article is a review of a palaeobiogeographic analysis of Jurassic Ostracods from East Africa, India and Madagascar and includes also some general remarks on palaeobiogeography, biodiversity and Ostracod ecology. The palaeobiogeographic study shows the high significance of this microfossil group for the reconstruction of palaeogeographic processes, particularly plate tectonic developm...

Resetting the evolution of marine reptiles at the Triassic-Jurassic boundary.

Ichthyosaurs were important marine predators in the Early Jurassic, and an abundant and diverse component of Mesozoic marine ecosystems. Despite their ecological importance, however, the Early Jurassic species represent a reduced remnant of their former significance in the Triassic. Ichthyosaurs passed through an evolutionary bottleneck at, or close to, the Triassic-Jurassic boundary, which red...

The earliest herbivorous marine reptile and its remarkable jaw apparatus

Newly discovered fossils of the Middle Triassic reptile Atopodentatus unicus call for a radical reassessment of its feeding behavior. The skull displays a pronounced hammerhead shape that was hitherto unknown. The long, straight anterior edges of both upper and lower jaws were lined with batteries of chisel-shaped teeth, whereas the remaining parts of the jaw rami supported densely packed needl...

Neuroanatomy of the Marine Jurassic Turtle Plesiochelys etalloni (Testudinata, Plesiochelyidae)

Turtles are one of the least explored clades regarding endocranial anatomy with few available descriptions of the brain and inner ear of extant representatives. In addition, the paleoneurology of extinct turtles is poorly known and based on only a few natural cranial endocasts. The main goal of this study is to provide for the first time a detailed description of the neuroanatomy of an extinct ...
